Jesus Invites Us to Walk with Him for Life
I don’t have the endurance or desire to do a marathon, though I marvel at those who do. I’ve never done a 5k, but considered the one that offered doughnuts at the finish line. But walking — now, that I can do.
The Bible often uses the description of walking to talk about our spiritual lives. In 1 John 1:7, we’re called to walk in the light. Galatians 5:16 says to walk in step with the Spirit. And Deuteronomy 6:7 tells us to walk and talk with those we love, sharing God’s truth with one another. Jesus invites us to walk with Him for life. As we do, we get to invite others to join us for a few steps, a block or a longer stretch of the road.
Walking is a learned skill. Who hasn’t marveled as a child takes tottering steps while grasping someone’s fingers? No one shames a child for falling, but we celebrate each attempted step. If you’ve needed rehabilitation, you know the work involved in strengthening muscles. Sometimes it takes a lot of effort for slow progress. If you’ve needed the assistance of a walker, you recognize the challenge of living in a world that doesn’t always make this easy.
Are you coming from a place of spiritual hurt or health? Maybe you’re used to walking alone or are weary from slow progress. Are you walking with a posture of shame, confidence or joy? Regardless, you’re invited in. Let’s walk together.
