Letters from Judy

05.01.16 | Care, Story

When’s the last time you received a heart-felt letter? It seems more and more a lost art. Maybe that’s why Judy Bauley’s letters to the seniors in our church community have found their way into many hearts. Ginny McMillan points out that Judy’s conversational tone and genuine care have had a surprising impact.

Ginny describes a day when she and Judy visited a man in an assisted care facility. When she mentioned to him that she brought Judy, the author of the letters he’d been receiving, he suddenly perked up and a smile transformed his face. “It was like a different person sitting there in that hospital bed.” He began talking enthusiastically about how much he looked forward to these letters as they chatted about the recent topics she’d mused over in writing.

“The letters are just my ramblings about things like the latest altercation with the squirrels in my yard or a story about my daughter’s golden retriever. I sometimes share an experience about my family. Even the Minnesota Vikings make it into a letter or two. The letters are just about every day life.”

To Judy, these brief letters are merely simple ramblings about life and faith. But sometimes simple is all God asks of us. It’s His power in the ordinary that can make all the difference.
