Sharing Your Story

As Christ-followers, we are heirs to the best story, the one God has written in Scripture and is continuing to write on the pages of our lives. Telling our stories allows us to embody the story of Scripture in a way that is compelling, transformative and life-giving.

“Are we going to be homeless?” That was the burning question in my mind after learning that my family and I had five weeks to find a new place to live. Once I stopped hyperventilating, we got to work exploring options and asking for prayer. Over the next few weeks, we had front row seats to see God at work at every turn. Nineteen days after moving out, He provided us with a new home and a place to live in between.

Not only has this experience deepened my trust in God but He has used my story to bless and encourage others. I believe sharing our stories is something we are all called to do. If that sounds overwhelming to you, you may have some of the following questions:

Do I have a story? Yes! Because God is the ultimate storyteller and we are created in His image. Every human being has a story worth telling. You do it everyday whether you know it or not.

How do I uncover my story? Start by asking yourself some questions. What are some ongoing themes that God has been teaching me? What are the milestones in my journey where I have seen God at work? Who are the people God has used to shape and invest in me? What have been my biggest triumphs and struggles? Don’t be afraid to ask someone you trust for help. Like watching a flower bloom or children getting taller, sometimes we are too close to see the gradual growth that God is bringing about.

What are some tips that can help me express my story?
Once you have identified your story (or stories), here are three things to keep in mind:

    1. Be authentic. Your story needs to come from an honest place. Being vulnerable earns you a level of trust with those listening. Don’t be afraid to admit that you are a work in progress. Welcoming people into your struggle lets them know that they aren’t alone and provides them with hope.
    2. Be engaging. Don’t hesitate to use humor, emotion and expression. Invite people into the narrative with you.
    3. Keep it simple. Be concise and know your “punchline.” Be aware of where the story is going.

I have heard it said that whoever tells the best story wins. As Christ-followers, we are heirs to the best story, the one God has written in Scripture and is continuing to write on the pages of our lives. Telling our stories allows us to embody the story of Scripture in a way that is compelling, transformative and life-giving. The world needs to hear your story. Will you share it with us?
